"As for the First Department of the Second Chief Directorate, which within the Second Chief Directorate of the KGB was responsible for the American line in general and for the CIA embassy station, although the Department took an active part in monitoring American intelligence officers in the city and in preparing the operation to detain the CIA intelligence officer, we were not able to identify Martha Peterson in a timely manner as an officer of the embassy station responsible for impersonal communication with Ogorodnik. The operational development dossier for Martha Peterson, as I recall, was led by operative Boris Pisarev, and when, after the detention of the American woman, the leadership of the department requested her file for familiarization, it turned out that instead of a voluminous volume with documents there was only a thin folder, in whose materials there was not a hint of her belonging to the CIA.
"The Americans beat us cleanly, arranging covert operations with Ogorodnik using a female CIA officer, which was a complete surprise for us at that time. There was no intelligence at Glavka [HQ 2nd Chief Directorate] about Peterson's affiliation with US intelligence, and she led a lifestyle in the embassy that did not allow the KGB to suspect her of involvement in the agent activities of the CIA embassy station."

"The American woman who had worked at the US Embassy in Moscow since 1975 had been in the embassy CIA station under deep cover. She was distinguished by exemplary behavior and outwardly never gave counterintelligence a reason to suspect her of belonging to the CIA. Subsequently, it became known that it was Martha Peterson who since 1975 had carried out dead drop operations to lay caches for Ogorodnik and did it early in the morning or late in the evening."

Благодарности и пролог

«Вдова-шпионка» – воспоминания бывшего сотрудника ЦРУ и первой женщины-агента, участвовавшей в разведывательных операциях в Москве. В 1970-х американка Марта Петерсон была отправлена в СССР, чтобы установить контакт с информантом под кодовым именем Тригон и на месте добывать ценные советские документы для американской разведки. В своей книге Марта Петерсон вспоминает, как решила стать агентом ЦРУ, делится впечатлениями от жизни в советской Москве, раскрывает подробности операций и рассказывает историю разоблачения их главного информанта и своего ареста, который вызвал международный скандал и которому КГБ даже посвятил отдельный стенд в своем музее.
